Dog training is more than just a way to teach tricks; it’s a crucial element in maintaining a healthy relationship between you and your pet. Understanding basic commands forms the foundation of any good dog training program and can be vital for your pet’s safety. For new dog owners, knowing these commands is not only helpful but essential as they serve as building blocks for more advanced training and obedience. In this article, we will delve into ten basic training commands every dog owner should know.

Sit

The “Sit” command is perhaps the most basic and essential command in dog training. It serves as a foundation for several other commands and can be incredibly useful in controlling your pet in various situations.

To teach this command, hold a treat above your dog’s head, moving it back over their head until they sit down. As they sit, say “Sit” and give them the treat. This command is essential for basic obedience and is a starting point for more complex commands.

Stay

The “Stay” command is critical for your dog’s safety in dangerous situations. For instance, this command is useful when you’re opening the front door, and you don’t want your pet to rush out.

Train your dog to stay by placing them in a sit or down position, say “Stay,” and hold your hand out in front of you palm out. Wait a moment, say “OK,” and give them a treat. Gradually increase the duration of the “Stay” as your dog gets more comfortable with the command.

Come

The “Come” command can be a lifesaver. It is crucial in calling your dog back to you if they happen to slip off their leash or get loose in an unsecured area.

To train your dog in this command, use a leash to guide them towards you while saying “Come.” Reward them with treats and affection when they obey. As your dog gets better at this, you can try it off-leash in a secure area.
