Safety Considerations
Most cats know when they’ve had enough catnip and will refuse any further exposure. However, excessive amounts can lead to gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting and diarrhea.
Always supervise your cat’s first few interactions with catnip to ensure they don’t consume it in excessive amounts. Consulting your vet for appropriate dosages can also be beneficial.
Age Factor in Sensitivity
It’s worth mentioning that kittens under the age of 8 weeks often do not respond to catnip. In fact, some may even show an aversion to it. Sensitivity to catnip usually develops as a cat matures.
If you’re introducing a kitten to catnip, it may be advisable to wait until they are at least 3 to 6 months old and to consult your veterinarian for guidance.
Possible Side Effects
While generally safe, some cats may show signs of overexcitement or even aggression after exposure to catnip. These reactions are generally rare but are worth noting.
If your cat shows any signs of aggression or extreme excitement that you find concerning, it’s best to remove the catnip and consult a veterinarian for advice.
